About Me

My Photo
I have a little garden in Rozelle about 5km from the centre of Sydney. I love to grow as much organic food as I can in a tiny space. The garden calms and excites me, and is a wonderful little green space in a big city. This blog is a record plotting the changes over seasons and years.

One potato, two potato...

We have just arrived home from our Christmas trip to Norway and Sweden (more about that later).  Being a bit nomadic at heart, I always feel sad at the end of my travels.  So through the haze of jet lag, the boys and I decided to cheer ourselves up and harvest the potatoes.  Always a fun job.

What a bumper crop!  Particularly special as they were the kid's plants.  Two boys = two planting sites (1) a potato bag  (2) about 800mm x 600mm of raised garden bed, both planted out with a variety of seed potatoes.  All of the soil was a mix of compost and duck manure, hilled with straw.  The green bag potato harvest was definitely the winner.  Probably 25 potatoes, no diseases, mostly a good size.  I love seeing the kids enjoying the garden and the root crops seem to be the biggest drawcard.

I do think that the 'travel to Sweden' was an important step in potato growing, Jamie. :)
